​Rector’s Report 2016
 
     It seems it was not so long ago that I was writing my first vestry report for the Parish of Long Point Bay. The year seems to have gone very quickly, but I suppose that is part of new horizons and being busy.
     Looking back at 2016, it has been a year of ‘firsts’ for me, as a new clergy person. The first cycle of the whole church year. Being ordained priest in May. Experiencing the entire church life cycle, with a baptism, two weddings and two funerals. A double dose of vestry meetings last year, to accommodate electing a new co-adjutor Bishop in February. As I write this, we are on the eve of the celebration of the birth of our Lord, as we look to begin the 2017 calendar year.
     I appreciate the support you have given me, in my enthusiasm and eagerness, and the willingness to try different things. Our joint worship services on the fifth Sunday of the month have strengthened the ties between our individual congregations, one of the hopes of those on the selection committee. As guests in one another’s ‘homes’, we are better able to appreciate the challenges and gifts of each unique community. The parish planning day gave further insight into ways we can co-operate with and support one another, as we work in our individual communities.
     One of the highlights of the year was the election of Bishop Linda Nicholls, as co-adjutor Bishop in February. She succeeded Bishop Bob Bennett as Bishop of Huron on November 1st.She is the first woman Bishop in Huron, and only the second elected from out of the diocese. Bishop Bob and Bishop Terry will continue to assist Bishop Linda when required. The financial reality of the diocese is that we can afford only one bishop. The Cathedral Church of St. Paul in London faces major structural repairs, and at present the sanctuary is not open.  As congregation members age and churches close due to financial challenges, the diocese and Anglican Church of Canada are seeking ways continue to be the church in the changing world today. That’s not bad…since the Church, the body of Christ is you and me. Together we can make a difference as we support one another, and look to spread the Good News where we live.
     One of the ways you will be able to stay current on the activities in the parish is by checking out the website, parishoflongpointbay.com. The main page will contain dates and things of common interest, and each congregation will have their own page and person to keep things up-to-date. The new year will bring further progress on this, and will require a bit of patience as it comes up to speed.
     Please let me know if you would like a visit, or if someone is in need of pastoral care. It’s important that these instances be shared, in confidence, so that no one is missed when they have a need. It is also important that you speak directly to me if you have a concern of any kind. Without trust and respect, we can’t build the relationships that are required for a healthy church family.
     We are all uniquely gifted by God, and all are welcome in God’s house. I look forward to continuing to work with you, as we move forward in 2017.
