HISTORY
St. Andrews-By-The Lake Community Church
Circa 1984
We have endeavoured to compile some history of the Church and through the efforts of quite a few residents and friends, have found the following information for our records. There may be omissions for which we apologize, and we would also be glad to hear of any further information which we might add.
The church originally named “JIREH” was built in 1881 on the farm of Captain Hutchinson of Rowan Mills, which is 3 miles northwest of Port Rowan. Ruth, one of his nine daughters, and a resident of New York, had the stained-glass windows in the sanctuary dedicated in 1926 in memory of her sisters Helen, Leah and Mina.
Rowan Mills, a logging community, declined, and the Church was abandoned and offered to the residents of Turkey Point for a Community Church. Under the direction of Bishop G.N. Luxton, Canon Cornish and Mrs. Bicknell of London, ON, the task of moving to the present sight proceeded at a cost of $1,100. The building was brought down the access at that time, the eastern hill road, the site having been purchased from John Lewis for an undisclosed amount.
Bishop Luxton dedicated the church in 1950, and it is registered as St. Andrews-By-The-Lake Community Church.
Leonard Lane, Rector's Warden, with the help of many of the residents, added pews, restored the steeple, shored up and painted the Church with the result that it became a very presentable place of worship. The present communion table was presented and dedicated in memory of Mr. Lane who remained as a Warden of the Church until the time of his death in 1980.
In 1967, the Herald and Layla McCall bequests made it possible to refurbish the church cottage and to carpet the church. The lovely, round, stained glass window at the west end of the church is in their memory.
The original communion vessels from Jireh Church were given a new home in the display cabinet at the front of the church. This was made by John Trafford, another Turkey Point resident.
In 1982 the community learned that this historical structure was badly in need of repair and a restoration fund was started through the combined efforts of Ernest Dray and Jack Mott, the Wardens that year. Over $10,000 was required for this undertaking and was raised by donations from a community with a heart and their friends. Restoration began in 1982 and was completed in 1984.
The effective sanctuary lamp was donated in memory of Jack Mott, and in 1983, the new lectern given by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bollert was dedicated to the memory of members of the Bollert and Ramey families.
Past Wardens , Fred Peters and Bob Jacob, continued with the renovations in 1983 which included a complete restoring and refinishing of the antique organ, landscaping, etc.
A community work party is held annually in the Spring to prepare the church and cottage for the arrival of the student minister for the three-month summer ministry. Each year we have had a third-year student from Huron University College in London, Ontario.
A further note of interest - our faithful organist - Mrs. Elaine Murray, is the granddaughter of Mrs. Lounsbury, the original organist at the Jireh Church. (To note, we have no permanent organist for St. Andrew's as it is a summer parish.)
St. Andrews- By-The-Lake is an ecumenical church welcoming residents and visitors of all denominations, and also provides facilities for Christenings and Weddings.
